THE BENEFITS OF REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:

Scientific evidence has proven regular exercise improves health and reduces the risk of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Research suggests you begin an exercise program with short sessions of 15-30 minutes (especially if you have been sedentary) and gradually build up to the desired level of intensity and duration. Before you begin a fitness program, especially if youre over 35, you should get a medical examination by a physician.

Physical activity improves health in the following ways:

  • Reduces the risk of premature death.

  • Reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

  • Reduces the risk of developing diabetes.

  • Reduces the risk of developing high blood pressure.

  • Helps reduce blood pressure in people who already have high blood pressure.

  • Reduces the risk of developing colon cancer.

  • Reduces feelings of depression and anxiety.

  • Helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints.

  • Helps older adults become stronger and improve the ability to move about with confidence in their balance and strength.

  • Promotes psychological well-being.
